Primary Succession occurs where no previous community has existed. Its a gradual change of community structure from one stage to another pertaining to land where no previous community existed. It begins with small pioneer species which help make the land more hospitable, the pioneer species end up getting out competed by other species that start to populate the area. An example of a place where primary succession occurs is Hawaii and its volcanoes. Primary succession usually takes from one hundred to one thousand years to occur.
